Many laboratory professionals have stepped back from POCT oversight because of its complexity, its many challenges and the variables that seem beyond their control. Added to an already full laboratory schedule, that can feel overwhelming. Yet looked at from the patient population’s needs, POCT supports population health, improves outcomes and engagement, reduces downstream spending and removes risk. It belongs inside the healthcare system, and POCT programmes gain most when the laboratory supervises them.
This course shows how to integrate POCT into the healthcare system so that portable, easy-to-use devices deliver quicker results and better outcomes. It reviews the basics of POCT, its benefits and shortcomings and the applicable testing procedures, and sets out the laboratory’s role: personnel, quality and competency requirements for performing POCT well.
