After conducting biosafety reviews in laboratories across East Africa, the same five issues come up again and again. None of them are technically difficult to fix. They simply drift over time when no one is watching.
1. Biosafety cabinet certification
Your BSC is only as protective as its last certification. Quarterly visual checks plus annual professional certification — no exceptions, even if the cabinet “feels fine.”
2. PPE compliance and fit
Lab coats left unbuttoned. Gloves reused between specimens. Goggles fogged and pushed up. Spend one shift quietly observing — you will see it.
3. Sharps and waste segregation
Mixed waste streams are the single most common audit finding. Color-coded bins help, but only if staff are trained AND the bins are emptied on schedule.
4. Spill response readiness
Spill kits get raided for supplies. Run an unannounced drill once a quarter. If the team cannot find a kit in 60 seconds, you have a problem.
5. Vaccination and exposure records
Every staff member handling specimens should have current Hepatitis B status documented. Exposure incident logs should be reviewed by the biosafety officer monthly.
None of this is glamorous. All of it matters.
